MRI uses radio waves, a strong magnetic field and a computer to generate detailed internal images of your body. In simple terms, a magnet encourages the hydrogen protons in your body to all behave in the same way: they are stimulated by a radio frequency pulse which is then switched off, leading the protons to emit extra energy. These signals are received by an antenna and a computer produces an image.
