Biography

Dr Stephen Brett is a consultant in Intensive Care Medicine. His NHS base is Hammersmith Hospital- part of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust- where he has been a consultant since 1998. As well as his clinical responsibilities he leads the Centre for Perioperative Medicine and Critical Care Research. In addition he is Reader in Critical Care at Imperial College London.  Dr Brett’s research portfolio is wide ranging- from human factors and psychology to clinical trials and studies aimed at understanding and maximising long term outcomes after critical illness. He works with government organisations including the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (chairing the guideline development group on “Rehabilitation after Critical Illness”), the Department of Health (influenza epidemiology and preparedness) and the Ministry of Defence (projects on nutrition during operational deployment and heat illness). He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals and frequently delivers invited lectures both at home in the UK and abroad. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal Critical Care.

In 1999 he started one of the first intensive care follow up clinics with the intention of helping people during their recovery; this sparked his interest in long term outcomes. Dr Brett has conducted a number of invited external expert reviews for hospitals and has given expert clinical reviews on patients in the UK, Europe and the Middle East.

In addition he is immediate past Chair of the Intensive Care Foundation and current President of the Intensive Care Society.
