Biography

After qualifying in 1998 Professor Lang-Lazdunski completed a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School and was then appointed Assistant Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Paris, France. He held two Consultant positions in Paris and was recruited to Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, London in 2003 where he created the programme in minimally invasive surgery for thoracic cancers. Since then has led the programme in Pleural Mesothelioma Surgery. Mr Lang-Lazdunski was promoted to Reader in Thoracic Surgery in 2011 and Professor of Thoracic surgery at King's College London in 2012. 

Mr Lang-Lazdunski has expertise in minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer and in the management of advanced-stage thoracic cancers.  He offers radical treatment (surgery) or palliative treatment for tracheal and bronchial tumours.

Having acquired an international reputation in the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma induced by asbestos, Mr Lang-Lazdunski has the lowest mortality rate worldwide in mesothelioma surgery.

He has a large practice in secondary lung cancer (renal, bowel and breast cancers, malignant melanoma and sarcoma) offering minimally invasive resections, metastasectomy or formal lung resections depending upon the lung metastases and is skilled in treating other benign thoracic conditions with conventional or minimally invasive treatments for lung emphysema. He also has experience in the treatment of chest trauma and penetrating thoracic injuries.

Mr Lang-Lazdunski has contributed greatly to research activity in the field of thoracic cancers having published more than 100 scientific articles in prestigious journals and textbooks. 

He is an active member of the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery, the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the British Thoracic Society, the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland, the International Mesothelioma Interest Group and the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group and was awarded the Bellegrand-Chevassu prize by the French Academy of Medicine in 2002.
